How to Know If Your Child is Depressed by Christine Crotts

Every parent’s main wish is to make sure their children are happy and healthy; however, childhood depression is being seen now more than ever. And the number of depressed children continues to rise. What is even more shocking is that your own child may be depressed right now and you may not know. So if you are worried that one of your children may be dealing with feelings of depression, there are several options available to you and your child. But no matter what choice you make, the sooner you take action, the better the chance your son or daughter has for making a healthy recovery. Again, since the number of children experiencing feelings of depression is doing nothing but climbing, it is imperative the parents of depressed children actively manage their child’s mental illness quickly and effectively.

Recognizing the Symptoms

The key to successfully treating childhood depression is recognizing the symptoms of this mental disorder. First of all, a child who is depressed will have experienced the symptoms listed below for a lengthy time period and these symptoms will have had a negative impact on their daily life. Of course, the manifestation of depression symptoms can come about in many ways, such is in your child’s overall disposition, appearance, behavior, and state of mind. For instance, a young child who once enjoyed certain activities may have begun to shy away from them, without providing any good cause or justifiable reason. This in turn causes their world to become a great deal smaller and lonelier. There is also the physical symptoms to consider. A depressed child may have lost a significant amount of weight, drastically reduced the amount of food they eat, complaints of digestion issues, headaches or migraines, and trouble getting a healthy night of uninterrupted sleep.

Usually, young children who are depressed show their state of mind through their physical appearance as opposed to older children because younger children are not as capable of clearly expressing their thoughts and feelings as older children.

Seeking Treatment for the Depressed Child

It is important to become knowledgeable about the symptoms of and ways to treat depressed children in order to help your own child. A good way to start is by talking to a mental health professional who is experienced in treating depressed children. Most often they will request that you bring your child in for several diagnostic visits.

There are also ways to help your depressed child cope at home. You can start by keeping an open line of communication between you and your depressed child, so he or she does not feel that they have to face their problems alone. Of course, learn about what your child likes to do for fun and take an interest in it. And always give and advice and listen when the situation calls for it.

Childhood depression is a very real and commonly occurring problem in today’s society, so it is important to take the signs of a depressed child seriously. By gaining a greater understanding of this mental condition, you can get a handle on your child’s mental illness early on, increasing their chance for recovery.

Splash Pad - The Fastest Way to Save a Child’s Life This Summer

Splash Pad - The Fastest Way to Save a Child’s Life This Summer by David James Taylor

The Fastest Way to Save a Child’s Life this Summer

There is a new trend growing and I like it. You see I worry about the same things other parents worry about. I also get distracted by the same things other parents get distracted by and if you are like me a pool can be one of a parents worst nightmares.

Every year during the spring and summer months, Children in America drown in their own backyard swimming pools. While many states have passed laws about pool safety and the necessity of fencing, it is not required in every state. Even with proper fencing in place, accidents still happen far too often. When pool fences are first constructed most families keep them locked consistently, but unfortunately, after a period of time, many families lose focus on the importance of locking fences.

While pool fences can prevent some injuries and deaths, they frequently offer a false sense of security. A simple latch on top can be opened by a child just as easy as by an adult. It takes seconds to pass through a pool fence and into the water.

Aside from the dangers related to unfenced pools, the depth of the water is also a hazard to young children. Most backyard swimming pools measure four to eight feet in depth, which is more than enough to take the life of a child.

All children love to play in water, but their playtime should not be unsafe. Backyard swimming pools are both dangerous and potentially life-threatening. Adults and parents must watch children in swimming pools constantly to ensure their safety. Regrettably, parents are sometimes incapable of watching their children every second they are in the water, and accidents do happen. A parent walks away to answer the phone or the door and a child is lost. It is not fair.

There is an emerging market for a new, safer alternative to swimming pools called splash pads. Splash pads allow children to have the same recreational fun with water but with little to no risk of drowning.

The most significant advantage of splash pads vs. swimming pools is safety, as many splash pad production companies are trying to promote. Hundreds of children are accidentally killed each year in their own backyard swimming pools. This statistic is shocking and must be changed.

Splash pads allow children to play in water without constant parental supervision. It is a fairly new idea, so splash pads are not yet mainstream, but it is a market expected to rise rapidly. Kids can now have spring and summertime fun a safer way!

In addition to the safety benefits of splash pads vs. swimming pools, there is a momentous cost difference between the two. Swimming pools cost tens of thousands of dollars to build and childproof, as well as hundreds a year to maintain. Splash pad kits are a one-time purchase and require much less maintenance. They also use much less water than a swimming pool.

The facts are fairly straightforward: we can decrease the amount of child drownings each year by purchasing and promoting splash pads-a safer and more economical choice than backyard swimming pools.

Smoking Around Your Kids Is A Very Big Mistake

Smoking Around Your Kids Is A Very Big Mistake by Marlin Ellis

Have you ever wondered why so many young people start smoking when they are teenagers? A lot of times it is because they want to be grown up as fast as the can and when they have other adults in their life that smoke tobacco, it can cause them to sub consciously believe that smoking makes you grown up. It sounds a little silly, but when you look at the statistics, most smokers come from homes where the parents or some other adult figure close to them smoked tobacco also. It is common knowledge that children will emulate what they see adults do because it is just human nature after all as it is with almost all animal species.

This means that if you are a smoker and you do it where your children can watch you, you might have already set in motion something that you will have a hard time correcting and that is having children that smoke tobacco too. There is a simple solution to help prevent your kids from becoming smokers and that is to simply not do it in front of them.

Most smokers find it difficult to curb and curtail their smoking habit even when they know it is bad for them. Perhaps if they realize that doing it near their kids could possibly cause them to smoke, they would stop. They have to make a conscious effort to never light up where they can see them. Even the smell that lingers on a smoker’s body and clothes can give them away and a smart kid will still know they have been smoking even if they did not see it.

One way to help yourself if you are a tobacco smoker and your kids as well is to use an electronic cigarette instead. Of course, this does not mean that you should use this device in front of them either, but when you do use it in private, there will be no smell for them to notice on you. The e cigarette also does not produce the same toxic smoke that tobacco does either. Using an electric cigarette will be more convenient for you because you can take a few quick puffs when you have a spare minute and then simply put it away. There is no reason to worry about fire because you do not light it. This also means you will not have to keep a lighter or matches lying around your home or in your car for a child to get a hold of accidentally either.

If you can not break the nicotine habit for yourself, at least do your best to ensure your children do not develop one. What they do not see, they will not try to copy, at least from seeing you do it anyway.

Parenting Tips For Brand-New Dads And Moms

Filed under: General — admin @ 6:34 am

Parenting Tips For Brand-New Dads And Moms by Chris Selers

Modern-day young mums and dads seemingly have deficiencies when it comes to good manners. One assumption is that their parents could have handed down their negative traits to them. The new generation of fathers and mothers needs to make an effort to obtain several great child parenting guidelines and begin taking the appropriate measures for nurturing their kids. The following are a number of pet peeves of experienced parents or those without children.

First and foremost, moms and dads from past generations wouldn’t have taken their newborns out of the house unless of course it had been unquestionably essential; they wouldn’t have ever thought of exposing their newborns to bacteria or taking their infants to a cafe except if they were sure that there wouldn’t be any shouting fits. The same thing also applies to movie theatres: a proper dad or mum will be stressed if her or his little one would cry in the middle of a theater showing. They also wouldn’t take their newborns store shopping with them! The second your infant begins to bawl, become a decent mom or dad and just take that infant back home. It is vicious to agitate your newborn by forcing them to stay conscious and wait for you to end your shopping trip when the only thing they want is some rest.

Brand-new dads and moms also possess bad tendencies when they take their babies and preschoolers to other people’s homes. Just because you change your child’s diapers on your own couch does not make it proper for you to do so on your grandma’s sofa or anyone else’s. You need to show some proper etiquette. Place a considerably sized blanket first or try to find out from your host where you can do the diaper change.

Furthermore, please do not let your youngsters hit other people’s pianos and don’t let them play with their toys on others’ furniture! Please watch your children when you’re at a friend’s home; be sure they do not wander too far away from you and touch people’s possessions. Not too long ago, a mom let her toddler enter into the grandma’s den and the kid discovered a supply of high blood pressure capsules. Some tablets became missing and a frantic search to find the missing medicines nearly ruined the day.

Also, if you’re a new father or mother, please ensure you have proper things to do for your young child and always make sure they play in a proper playroom. Don’t allow them to colour or use their coloured markers on somebody’s white rug.

Mothers and fathers must be particularly cautious when bringing their infants to others’ houses since those residences might not really be child-proofed. There will be pricey, breakable stuff within reach and hazardous goods lying around. Those who don’t have kids do not take the exact same safety measures that brand-new dads and moms must take.

Allowing children to try and do things in your residence doesn’t mean that it’s ok for them to do similar things in others’ residences. The very first thing you must do with your infant is to raise her or him responsibly. If you wish to show your kids manners, you should begin by learning them yourself.

Last but not least, if your kid is ill, please don’t let them near the elderly. The cold that your toddler has can impact an elderly person in a different way and cause someone to get terribly unwell.

Raising a infant properly would require knowledgeable mothers and fathers. Becoming a responsible mom or dad with good manners is merely the 1st step.
