These are the types of things you can begin working on today, no matter how old your children or how many you have.

1. Children need to feel loved. While this seems like an obvious one, many parents overlook how the child needs to feel loved. You may think you are showing love by working hard to provide for the family’s needs or buying your child something she really wants. But what your children really need is for you to hold them, hug them and tell them daily that you love them and that you are proud of them. All it takes is 10 minutes per day with each child to show them that you love them. Make it a priority.

2. Children need regular positive attention. This ties in with number one above. While it’s our job as parents to correct negative behaviors in our children, it’s also important to give positive attention. While we are often quick to criticize and correct, we also need to be quick to praise. Make an effort to catch your child doing something good and then be sure to compliment and praise them right away.

3. Children need a consistent routine. It’s important for your child to have a predictable routine each day because this helps them to feel secure. While spontaneity is good from time to time, there should be consistency in what is expected from them at home and at school. You should set boundaries for what is acceptable behavior and what is not. It’s essential to be consistent with these expectations so your child knows with a complete certainty what will be expected of them each day.

4. Children need their feelings to be acknowledged. It’s easy as the parent to tell our children what we think they mean or are thinking. However, we need to allow our children a chance to express themselves and we need to acknowledge what they are feeling. “I know you don’t want to eat your peas because you don’t think they taste good. But I need you to please try them because they are good for you.” Acknowledging their feelings will help them listen to you.

5. Children need good role models. As the parent, you are the first role model your child will ever have and the one that means the most. You need to be an example of positive behavior at all times. Always look for new ways to show positive behavior in front of your children and they will copy you.

Watching your daughter dress up by her self is always a great source of entertainment. But this seemingly cute moment is actually an important life skill that can foster independence and encourage logical thinking. These are two important traits that will help her grow into a self-assured adult.

Teaching your daughter how to dress up may not seem important or urgent, but now is the perfect time to add it to your parenting “to do” list.

Decisions, Decisions

Your child has not yet mastered the “art of dressing up,” so she will need you to guide her. Give her options, but in the end, allow her to select what she wants to wear. Too many choices will overwhelm her, so limit the choices to only two or three outfits. Give her options of what hair accessories she wants to pair her outfit with as well. Once she has chosen an outfit and hair accessories, lay the selected pieces neatly on a chair so she can easily reach them the next morning.

Poster Child

Make a “morning routine poster” that illustrates what she needs to do to get dressed everyday. Here’s an idea: draw separate columns on a poster board and then sketch a picture of each clothing item.
